The Life of GWENDOLYN MARIE HARRIS DOUGHERTY

Gwendolyn Marie Dougherty, 92, passed away on Saturday, December 18, 2010 at Mercy Hospice, Johnston.  Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 21 at Iles Funeral Homes-Westover Chapel.  Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 22, at Highland Memory Gardens, Des Moines.

Gwen was born December 21, 1917 near  Elkhart, Iowa to Charles and Edna (Frederick) Harris.  She spent her early childhood in Mason City and moved to Des Moines at the age of ten.  She grew up in the Highland Park area in Des Moines, graduating from East High School in 1935.  She graduated from Drake University in 1939, with a degree in Economics.  After graduating, Gwen worked at the Des Moines Public Library and Meredity Publishing Company.

In 1942, she married Oliver M. Dougherty residing in Beaverdale for 60 years.  She worked as an elementary librarian for the Des Moines Public Schools for 17 years, retiring in 1979.  She spent a major part of her career at Samuelson Elementary School.  Gwen was a member of Plymouth Congregational United Church of Chrsit.  She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and family vacations in the Western United States.  She was an avid Hawkeye fan, going to many football games over the years.

Gwen will be missed by her daughters, Kathleen Dougherty of Johnston and Justine Dougherty of Des Moines.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Dougherty; her parents; and a dear sister, Lucille Harris.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Drake University College of Arts and Sciences.
