The Life of HELEN LORENA HUTSON ROLAND

Helen Lorena (Hutson) Roland, 79, died Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at Bright Kavanagh Hospice House. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, May 28, 2010 at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street, with burial at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Helen was born November 9, 1930 in Lincoln, NE to Forest Edward and Fern M. Hutson (Knapp Cramer). Helen retired from Southeast Polk School District where she was a custodian at the high school, junior high, and the most years devoted, to Four Mile Elementary. Helen was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 9662. She loved people, never forgot birthdays and was known for her green thumb, she always had flowers. She was a “country music” girl when country wasn’t cool and her favorite pastime in later years were the slots at the Casino. Above all, her family came first. Helen is survived by her children, Carolina (Michael) Holmes, Donna Schmeling, JoAnn Harvey, Jerry (Michele) Roland, and John (Sara) Roland; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; brothers, John Hutson and Albert (Pam) Hutson; sister -in-law, Mary Hutson; and many cousins; nephews; nieces; and beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Edward Hutson, Donald Cramer, and Bob Sodergren; sister, Betty Lou; and several half brothers and sisters. A special thanks goes to her many friends at the Rose Assisted Living of East Des Moines; the doctors and nurses of Mercy Hospital; and the staff at Fleur Heights Wellness and Bright Kavanagh Hospice House.
