The Life of DARRELL PATRICK CRAIG

Darrell P. Craig, 80, died August 1, 2011 at his home in Omaha, NE where he had resided for the past year. Darrell was born October 2, 1930 in Des Moines, IA. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 and served during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge in 1955, he was united in holy matrimony to Beverly Maneely on July 30, 1955. He graduated from Drake University in 1959 and enjoyed a long career in the transportation industry, primarily in the Des Moines area, until his retirement from EMCO in 1995. Darrell was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was an avid golfer, long-time square dancer and round dancer, sports’ enthusiast, and always remained a proud Dowling High School alum. Darrell is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beverly; daughter, Julie (Jack) Schuler of Indianola, IA; sons, Patrick of Omaha, NE, Rick (Cindy Wallace) of Greensboro, NC, Doug of Louisville, KY; daughters, Laurie (Greg) Porter of Omaha, NE and Carrie (Lance) Whitacre of Hudson, WI; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Irene; and brothers, Edward and Byron. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 6, 2011 at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 7075 Ashworth Road, West Des Moines, followed by burial at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday, August 5, 2011 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a vigil service at 7 p.m. at Hamilton’s on Westown Parkway, 3601 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Family will be present beginning at 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American Heart Association, 1111 Ninth Street, Suite 280, Des Moines, IA 50314 or the American Diabetes Association, 2600 72nd Street, Suite O, Urbandale, IA 50322.
