The Life of BESSIE FRIEDA ELLANDSON

B. Frieda Ellandson, age 95, was born September 16, 1914, in Minot, North Dakota to Reverend T.F. Gullixson and Bessie (Fries) Gullixson. She was the third daughter of four children. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, November 15, 2010, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 2600 E. Euclid. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hamilton’s Funeral Home, 605 Lyon Street. Mrs. Ellandson will be buried at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery at a later date. Frieda attended school in Minot until she was a junior in high school when the family moved to St. Paul, Minnesota. She graduated from Mechanic Arts High School, St. Paul in 1932. She attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota and graduated with a BA in Sociology. In 1938 Frieda married Nolan Ellandson. She and her husband Nolan came to Iowa from Nebraska in 1960 after living in Minnesota and on an island in the Hudson River in New York during WWII as part of Nolan’s military service. Her working career was always in the field of Social Work. The last position she held was as a Social Worker with Polk County Social Services in Des Moines until her retirement. Together, Frieda and Nolan enjoyed camping in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and parts of Canada, as well as Western United States. Frieda had many interests and hobbies. She enjoyed reading, gardening, handwork, sewing, Tole painting and Rosemaling (on wood). At Christmas time, she loved baking Scandinavian cookies for her family, friends and co-workers. She was a charter member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Des Moines and former active member of the Des Moines Women’s Club. Daughter, Patricia Rains of Kansas City, Missouri; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren survive Frieda along with nephew, Tom Grimsrud of Seattle, Washington; two nieces, Congresswoman Lois Capps of Santa Barbara, CA and Frieda (John) Martilla of Beaverton, Oregon. All of whom have been loving and supportive of Frieda in her retirement. She was preceded in death by her husband Nolan; parents; brother, Thomas; and sisters, Lillian, Sloveig and Mary. Memorial contributions may be made to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Remembrance of Frieda.
