The Life of SHIRLEY IRENE NYSTROM

Shirley Nystrom, 66, passed from this life on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at her home, with her family by her side. Shirley was born September 6, 1942 in Des Moines to Margaret and Ernest Barnes. She lived in Des Moines most of her life and retired from Care Initiatives in 2004. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her family was her first love, her second love was music and dancing. She and her brother Richard Barnes performed and competed at the Val Air Ballroom, Riviera Ballroom at the River View Park, and the Harris Hop in 1958 and 1959 winning several awards including the title of Queen and King of the state of Iowa. She will always be remembered for her grace on the dance floor where she loved to be with her beloved brother Richard. Shirley also enjoyed spending time at Prairie Meadows, and playing cards and games with family and friends. Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Darwin; her children: Kelli (Fred) Csader, Melinda (John) Toomey, and Rick Nystrom; her grandchildren: Melinda, Jeff, Janelle, and Ricky; two step grandchildren: Fred, Jr., Jenny; 2 great grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren; and her sisters, Betty Lou Bell of Des Moines, and Beverly Clausi of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister Patty Hutton, and her brothers: Richard and Larry Barnes. Family will be receiving friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at Hamilton's Funeral Home, 605 Lyon St. in Des Moines. The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at the funeral home, performed by Shirley's brother-in-law, Rev. J. Dale Nystrom of Castro Valley, CA. The family will have a private burial service on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
