The Life of BETTY LOU NELSON

Betty L. Nelson, 85, died of heart disease Monday, March 14, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She was born February 14, 1926, in rural Hardin County, daughter of Ivan and Clara (Ziebell) Cook. Betty was a lifetime member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 374 in Highland Park. She retired after 23 years of service as a housekeeper for Valley View Village, and then was the ‘train lady’ at Merle Hay Mall for ten years. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and gardening. Betty is survived by her children, David (Sherryll) Nelson, Kevin (Sandra) Nelson, Kirk (Sandy) Nelson, Julie (Mike) Witmer; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Jean Page; brothers, Ralph (Judy) Cook and Rex (Iris) Cook; brothers-in-law, Vitus Benda and Clyde Ball; and a host of other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse; parents; three infant children; sisters, Gela, Dorothy and Barbara; brothers, Ervan, Franklin, and Gary. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Friday, March 18, 2011, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue, with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Family will greet visitors from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Des Moines Chapter of the American Heart Association in loving memory of Betty.
