The Life of LORETTA JEAN LYNDE

Loretta Lynde, 89, went to be with the Lord Sunday, July 17, 2011, at The Village in Indianola, Iowa. Loretta was born January 22, 1922, in Iowa City, as “Dorothy Masters.” She was adopted at birth and named Loretta Gene Lake, later changing her middle name to Jean. She grew up as an only child in the Des Moines area and attended Crocker School and West Jr./Sr. High School. Loretta married Lyle Melvin Lynde in 1939, and they made their home in Saylor Township north of Des Moines. Together they raised five children, Loretta (Don) Ried of Newell; George-deceased (Marilyn) Lynde; Larry (Donna) Lynde of Des Moines; Linda Archer of Indianola; and Leland (Pamela) Lynde of Des Moines. Together they have given her 20 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchidren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren. Loretta trusted Jesus Christ to be her Savior; then quietly and steadfastly influenced others to know Him personally by praying for them, taking them to Sunday school, and encouraging friends to be involved in Bible study (especially by J. Vernon McGee). She was a charter member of Bethany Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. Loretta was blessed to be a stay-at-home wife and mother. She was always willing to help others in various ways, such as sharing her many home-made pies, giving rides as needed, and being a Cub Scout Den Mother. She worked diligently canning and freezing all the fruits and vegetables from Lyle’s ever-growing garden and fruit trees. She willingly took care of her grandchildren when needed, who fondly remember the many hours of playing various table games. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at Bethany Reformed Church, 720 NE 52nd Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with funeral services beginning at 1 p.m. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Bethany Reformed Church in loving memory of Loretta.
