The Life of DONALD BLAKESLEY UNDERWOOD

Donald B. Underwood of Ankeny was born on December 13, 1933 in Spencer, IA to Victor and Lyona Underwood, raised by his aunt Hazel Underwood. He died Sunday, July 18, 2010 after a short battle with cancer.

He graduated from Spencer High School in 1953 and was drafted for the United States Army in the fall of 1953, serving in Korea and Guam until his honorable discharge in 1955. On November 10, 1957 he married Elinor Dwight. He worked for the Des Moines Register for 20 years and retired in 1997 from Drake University as the Athletic Equipment Manager after 21 years of service.

Donald was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Bulldog Club. He took many vacations and wintered in Texas.

Don is survived by his wife, Elinor; children, Mark (Peggy) Underwood of Des Moines, Kim (Mike) Larson of Granger, Randy (Laura) Underwood of Racine, WI; grandchildren, Kristen, Kelly, Kevin, Emilie, Summer, Jackson and Chase; four great-grandchildren, with one on the way; and two brothers, William and Richard.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 2010 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1100 SE Sharon Drive, Ankeny, with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may visit with family from 5-8 p.m., Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at the church.

Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church or Iowa Health Hospice Taylor House in loving memory of Don.
