The Life of OLIVER M DOUGHERTY

Oliver Dougherty, 91, passed away Thursday, April 15, 2004 at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston.  Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 19, at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Oliver was born in Cedar County, Iowa.  He spent his boyhood in rural South Dakota, returning to Cedar County at the age of 12.  Oliver graduated from Stanwood High School and later from the University of Iowa College of Business.  He moved to Des Moines in 1938 and spent most of his career with Arthur Sanford and Company as head of accounting for the Des Moines Office and as manager of the Fleming Building, retiring in 1973. Oliver was a member of Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ.

Oliver was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan.  He enjoyed family vacations in the Western United States and working with figures and mathematical puzzles.

Oliver was preceded in death by his four brothers, Elbert, Ralph, Wayne and Wilbur.  He is survived by his wife, Gwen; and two daughters, Kathleen Dougherty of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Justine Doughtery of Des Moines.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Westover Funeral Home.  Memorial contributions can be made to the University of Iowa Foundation.
