The Life of ALBERT ELMER BURGETT

Albert Burgett, 36, of 1516 Des Moines St. drowned Monday evening when he apparently slipped off a floating raft in the strip mine area near Brooks Drive south of the Iowa Power and Light Co. plant near the southeast city limits.

Richard Brooks, 32 of 1523 1/2 Des Moines St., who was with Burgett, said five persons were on the raft about 7 p.m. when the drowning occured.

"One minute he was there, and the next minute he was gone," Brooks said.  "Nobody saw him go in, there wan''t even a splash."

Donald Hanlin, of 1523 Des Moines St., said Burgett could not swim well.  He said a group of seven had gone to the area about 4:30 p.m. for a picnic.

Hanlin said several persons swam about "for about 45 minutes looking for him," before notifying authorities.

Sheriff Wilbur Hildreth said it took 20 minutes to locate the area because the drowning originally had been reported in a gravel pit.

The body was recovered about 9 p.m. in 30 feet of water about 40 feet from the bank.

Services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Hamilton''s Funeral Home.  Interment will be at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
