The Life of CRAIG RANDALL CALLEN

It is with great sadness that the family marks the passing of Professor Craig R. Callen, who died April 23, 2011, after a brief illness. Craig was born in Des Moines, Iowa on June 12, 1950 and graduated from Saydel High School with Honors. He received his BA from the University of Iowa with high distinction, and went on to receive his JD at Harvard Law School, where he also graduated with distinction. He practiced law with firms in Chicago and Milwaukee. He began his academic career in 1978 with University Miami School of Law. He also taught at Oklahoma City University School of Law, and Mississippi College School of Law. He was a visiting professor at the University of Colorado, the University of Tennessee, and the University of Leiden in the Netherlands. Since 2002 Professor Callen was a member of the MSU law family, where he taught civil procedure and evidence. Professor Callen was recognized for his significant contributions to the field of evidence law and theory and has published countless articles in law reviews and journals. His father, Dale R. Callen precedes him in death, as well as his grandparents, Phillip J. and Eva (Dernovich) Delpierre, and James R. and Fanny (Glick) Callen, and several aunts and uncles. He is survived by his mother, Evelyn L. Callen; his brother, Bruce (Sandy) Callen; his sister, Sheri (Frank) Gustafson; his niece, Linda (Antoine) Parker; his nephew, Andrew Peek; his niece, Jenna Callen; and nephew, Michael Callen. He also has one grandnephew and three grandnieces. In addition to his immediate family, the faculty, staff, and students of Michigan State University College of Law will mourn his loss. Craig took great pride in his students, and they maintained a place in his heart, much as though they were his own children. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Parkinson Foundation or to Grandview Lutheran Church. A celebration of life will be held at Grandview Lutheran Church, E. 13th and Hull Avenue on Saturday, June 18 at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 9:30 until 11. A private burial service for the family will be held at Highland Memorial Gardens at 9 a.m.
