The Life of EUGENE WILLIAM MCDOWELL
Eugene "Gene" McDowell, 76, passed away Sunday, June 19, 2005. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 22 at Galilee Baptist Church, 2208 Des Moines Street, followed by burial in Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery, 1 NE 60th Avenue.
Gene was born in Spartanburg, SC before the family moved to Des Moines in 1940. After serving in the U.S. Navy during WW II he was pressroom supervisor at the Des Moines Register where he was employed for 38 years before retirement. He was a member of Galilee Baptist Church and a long-time devoted fan of NASCAR and the Iowa State Fair.
Survivors include his sons, Jeff (Mary Lou) of Des Moines, Jim (Karla) of Adel, and Joel (Tammy) of Altoona; a daughter, Jenny (Mark) Hammer of Wayne, NE; two sisters, Barbara Tucker of Des Moines and Kay (Dave) Williams of Clive; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nadine (Deenie), his parents, one brother, and one grandson.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 21 at Grandview Park Funeral Home. Memorial gifts may go to Galilee Baptist Church or the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation.
