The Life of THOMAS L SMITH

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Stephen''s Lutheran Church for Thomas L. Smith, 61, of Johnston, who died of a heart ailment Monday at Mercy Hospital Medical Center.  Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born in Waukee and lived in Johnston most of his life.  A retired employee of John Deere, he was a member of St. Stephen''s Lutheran Church, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, Temple Commandry, Royal Arch Masons, Auburn Masonic Lodge, and Local 450 of the United Auto Workers Union.  He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Margarite; a son, Thomas L. Jr. of Urbandale; a daughter, Judy Griffiths of Altoona; three sisters, Thelma Cairns of Ankeny, Bernice Farland of Texarkana, TX, and Bernadine Wittford of California; a brother, Gerald of Colorado Springs, CO; and six grandchildren.

The family suggests that any memorial contributions be made to the Shriner''s Hospital for Crippled Children.
