Melanie Rose Beckler, 18, of 1336 Arthur Ave., died of head injuries Wednesday at Iowa Lutheran Hospital. A private service is planned at Hamilton's Funeral Home. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Dr. R.C. Wooters Polk County medical examiner, said Miss Beckler suffered extensive head injuries apparently from being beaten. An autopsy is being performed. She was a lifelong resident of Des Moines and was a cashier for Burger King Restaurant and was a member of Calvary Apostolic Chruch. Survivors include her father, Paul of Des Moines; her mother and stepfather, Peggi and Heinz Spors of Des Moines; two sister, Lorraine Beckler of Dallas, Texas, and Kathi Smith of Des Moines; two brothers, Ed Beckler and Gary Smith, both of Des Moines; her grandparents, Alvena Gomez and Berniece Schierholz, both of Des Moines; and her step-grandparents, Leon and Gertrud Spargo of Des Moines. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today at the funeral home.
