The Life of Joan Eloise Huggins

Joan Blubaugh Huggins passed away peacefully on March 30, 2023 at the age of 92. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Huggins, and is survived by her daughter Candi Stewart, her grandsons Matt (Jenna) and Eric, and her great-granddaughter Blair.
Joan was born in Fort Scott KS on October 8, 1930 to Ivan and Lillie Blubaugh. After graduating from Fort Scott High School, a handsome player on the Fort Scott community College Football team named Floyd noticed the cute, bubbly cheerleader and the rest was history. On August 6, 1950, Joan and Floyd were married at First Methodist Church of Fort Scott, which began their life of many adventures, living across the United States, and traveling the world. As Floyd played then coached for various college football teams, Joan would serve as the “team mother”, cooking for the players and providing support for them. She was a constant support for whatever program her husband was involved in and always welcomed players and their families into her home with her generous hospitality. Joan was also an active member of the First Baptist Church in Olathe, regularly hosted bridge club and enjoyed hosting family gatherings with each holiday.
Joan was a big personality and quite outspoken. She was also the type to pull up her sleeves and get to work – if Joan said she was going to do it, you can bet she would get it done…. and exactly to her standards. Her gravy was top-notch and she was always willing to “help” you with your own. She also had a sharp sense of humor and had probably one of the most infectious laughs you have ever heard in your life. One of the things that brought her so much laughter were her friends. She was adamant about keeping in touch with them no matter where they were via written notes or frequent phone calls. Joan put much of her time into her high school class reunions and was always thrilled to catch up with classmates each year.

Joan’s greatest love was for her daughter and grandsons. When she would cheer on Candi at a basketball game or at one of her many horse shows, you always knew where she was in the stands because you could hear her exuberance over everyone else. She was so proud of Candi’s teaching career and awards as well. Joan’s best time of her life was watching Matt and Eric grow up and attending their events. Whether it was a drum line performance or a LaCrosse game, she was at them all. She loved giving her grandsons unsolicited advice and was sure they always took it to heart. She planned fun outings and events for the boys always making sure they were engaged in some sort of activity. They were truly who brought her the most joy in her life.
Joan Huggins was a larger-than-life force even at her small 5’4” stature. She was constantlycreating fun events to share with her family and friends to bring laughter and joy into her home. She loved deeply in her own way and made a lasting impression on all who knew her.
