The Life of Bertell Louis Terry Mathias

Bertell Louis Terry Mathias was the third child born to the late Gloria and George T. Mathias Jr. on August 8th, 1959 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. He attended Samuel B. Huey Elementary School and Turner Middle School where he played the trumpet. Bertell went on to Overbrook High School (the Panthers) where he was on the swim and soccer teams. He trained under the leadership of Jimmy Ellis (the only swim coach with a Hollywood film produced about his life; “PRIDE”) and became a magnificent diver and competed in numerous swim-meets. Bertell was a very motivated and conscientious student graduating from Overbrook High School in June 1977. Bert, as he was affectionally called, turned down the United States Coast Guard and took a job with Muller Inc. as a driver of big rig tractor trailers where he was employed for 40 years.

Bert and his siblings Robin and Timmy grew up loving the sun and fun at Atlantic City beach and Twin Lakes in New Jersey where his father had a business along with his brother in-law, the late Roy “Crazy Horse” Johnson. Here his father taught his children how to swim and is where they discovered their love of many large dogs. He was a committed, loving son and a good friend to his father. Bert was a dedicated employee for Muller Inc., worked long hours, up at the crack of dawn, drove long distances, and never wanted to take time off from his job.

Bert had a love of motorcycles, dirt bikes, jet skis and all things that kept his adrenaline flowing. He knew a lot about cars, weapons, and electronics, had instruments, athletic equipment, and tools for everything. His motorcycle guys called him Big Bopper and he looked so cool in his Darth Vader helmet and Madd Max boots. He was a very private person, yet the nicest, generous, and protective person one could know. Bert cautiously observed unfamiliar people, had a very small circle of friends, and only told you what he wanted you to know. He appreciated music, a good movie, supplied his family with loads of boot-leg DVDs, and was very knowledgeable about international topics. Often Bert would respond in his way of communication: “what’s your location”, “affirmative”, “that’s a negative”, and “roger that”!

Bert is survived by his loving partner Valorie Lacey; siblings Robin Montague (Jeffrey) and George T. Mathias III “Timmy” (Andrea); uncle Edwin Mathias; nephew George T. Mathias IV “Little T” (Nicole); nieces Blayre Montague Owens (Maurice) and Miranda Mathias; great nephews Kareem Mathias, George T. Mathias V, and Christopher Mathias; great niece Dahlia Mathias; great-great niece Sadie Mathias; and a host of cousins and friends.

Lovingly submitted,

The Family

Missing You

I write this in memory of you Bert. My heart was hurt when I heard that God put you to sleep. I knew that you had a hard fight, you struggled to live. I'm glad I had the chance to encourage you to live. You did your best and I was very proud of you. I was hoping for the best to see you up and around again but God took you home. I'm glad you were able to see our love for you before you went to sleep. Loving you and will be glad to see you one day on the other side.    Bessie

Childhood friendship

Rest in love and peace, my friend Bert. You were like a little brother to me. I'll never forget our fun times growing up on Spruce Street in Philadelphia. The pranks we pulled with my brother Stanley, the spider webs made from the black thread we tied to the trees and porch at night. We would sit back and watch people walk through, not knowing what they were tangled in, as we held back our laughs and giggles. I'm not sure who dubbed you with the nickname Bert with the dirty tee shirt (More than likely Stanley), but we loved you nonetheless. You are forever etched in my heart. -Francine Lacey King

To the Family of Bert Mathias

When I heard of your passing I was shocked. I remember as a fine young man who was always quiet. You took two of my nephews under your wing. They are now grown with children of their own.Words cannnot express how I feel. I want your family to know that you will be missed. You were family to us. Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal.

Friendship

I remember Bert as a young boy, around 12 years old when my family moved to West Philadelphia, April 1971. My family moved into 5035 Spruce Street, two doors away  from the Mathias family. My father noticed shortly after meeting them, Bert was considerate and willing to help anyone.  As the years when by, Bert was a big brother to my son Raymond, teaching him how to drive at a early age. There's a lot of fond memories, going back 52 years I can speak of and their all good. Gone, but you will be never forgotten Bert. Until we meet again, Lois Lacey, son Raymond L. Lacey Sr., his wife Shamah, children Alexis and Raymond Jr., RIP

Bert and Me

Bert and I met when my family moved to Spruce in  the Spring of 1970. . I remember looking out the living room window one afternoon and across the street I saw a beautiful boy with golden blonde hair . My father saw me staring at Bert and I guess he knew  I was in love . My Dad took Bert under his wing from then on. He would take Bert to Sears and other places and Bert also went to church with us on Sundays. He even got baptized in Jesus name . I remember the pizza runs with him and two of my neohews Raymond and William . The fun we had growing up on Spruce And our life together in New Jersey. We weren't always together but  we truly loved each other very much . On April 15 th 2022 we got an apt together and began a new chapter of our lives  Unfortunately our time was cut short .  Bert becane ill and had to go into the hospital .

Bert was extremely generous whether it was of monetary value or kind words He loved to joke too.

Famiiy and and friends be kind to one another and even a stranger on the street . You never know you might be entertaining an Angel 🙏☮️❤️
