The Life of Lois P Powell

Lois was born on June 14, 1928, to Ruth Olive Bunn and Hugo Polson in Brooklyn, NY. When Lois was very young, she moved with her mother to Upper Darby, PA, where she was raised. She graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1946 and then attended Pierce School of Business. After graduation from Pierce, Lois worked as a secretary for several years at Gray and Rogers. Lois had a life-long love of singing and was a member of The Savoy Company, an amateur theater group dedicated to performing the comedic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. It was through the friends that she made in Savoy that she met her husband Richard Elliott Powell, whom she married in 1962. After many years spent as a housewife and stay-at-home mom, Lois went back to work as a secretary at the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, PA, a job she loved very much. In her retired years, she continued to work with children as a volunteer teacher’s assistant at Rose Tree Elementary School. Lois was a member of the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church and sang for many years in their Senior Choir. She and her husband were very blessed to be able to take several amazing trips with the choir to visit and sing for other congregations around the world, including one incredibly memorable trip to China.

Lois enjoyed reading; gardening; crocheting; needlepoint; and her beloved NY Times Crossword puzzles, particularly the Sunday edition, which she completed every week.

Lois is predeceased by her husband, Richard Powell. She is survived by her daughter, Lois Ruth Powell, and her grandson, Michael Paul Hochhaus.
