The Life of Ruth Keeney

Ruth, “Ruthie”, Keeney, 86, lifelong resident of Essington, PA, passed away peacefully at home with her caregiver and loving companion, Shirley Calel on January 26, 2023. Born on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1936, Ruth was the first-born child of the late Anna (Churrick) Haugland and Martin Haugland.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Keeney, parents, Anna and Martin Haugland, and Brother Joseph Haugland.
Ruth is survived by her two sons, Martin Keeney and Vaughn Keeney, granddaughters Paige Shaika and Jaclyn Bailey Troop and nephews Christian Haugland and Joseph Haugland Jr.
Ruth graduated from Ridley Park High School in 1954. Upon graduation, Ruth secured a position as legal secretary at a prestigious Center City Philadelphia Law Firm. Her professional career paused to start a family in 1960. In 1972, Ruth resumed her career at the Law Firm of Pileggi & Desmond, Chester, PA. In 1976, Ruth assumed the role of Chief Administrative Assistant with the newly formed Delaware County Authority, Media, PA. Ruth continued in this position for 39 years retiring at age 79.
Throughout her life, Ruth enjoyed singing and playing the piano. Her lovely soprano voice graced numerous church choirs and choral ensembles. Ruth’s initial vocal solo “The Birthday of a King” was enthusiastically received by congregants of the First Baptist Church of Essington.

Ruth will be remembered for her lifelong faith, generous heart and desire to care for others. Ruth will be deeply missed by her family and those whose lives she touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Dementia Society of America.
