The Life of Mr. Richard L. Hursh

Richard L. "Dick" Hursh, 87, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, May 8, 2016 after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. Dick was the husband of Thelma E. (Hafer) Hursh of York. They recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary.

Born in York on April 23, 1929 to the late Leroy Hursh and Marie (Miller) Dressel, Dick is survived by his daughters, Lisa A. Strine and her husband, John, of York and Mindy J. Smith and her husband, Jim of West Richland, Wash.; five grandchildren, Erin E. Strine of York, Matthew J. Strine and his wife, Brittany of York, Dr. Kyle R. Smith and his wife, Larkin of Bethesda, Md., Shannon E. Smith of Lancaster, and Tanner J. Smith of Seattle, Wash.; one great-granddaughter, Audrey O. Strine of York; and one brother, Marlyn Hursh, and his wife, Shirley of York.

Dick loved his family and friends, nature, his cabin at Pine Grove Furnace State Park, history and hunting. He was exceptionally creative and loved working with his hands.

A 1948 graduate of William Penn Senior High School, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1952 during the Korean War. Dick was the owner of C.J. Hafer Display Service in York until his retirement.

He was an Eagle Scout and a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in York.

Friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life Open House at the Hursh home on Sunday, May 15, 2016 from 2 to 4 p.m. Private burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
