The Life of Mr. Gerald P. "Jerry" Kern

Gerald P. "Jerry" Kern, 92, of Kutztown, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2023 in Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest, Salisbury Township. He was the widower of the late Virginia C. (Conrad) Kern, who died on June 6, 2017 and whom he married on February 25, 1956.

 

Born in Weisenberg Township, Lehigh County, and raised in Kutztown, Jerry was the son of the late Ernest A. and Irene M. (Herman) Kern and attended Kutztown Area High School. Gerald honorably and faithfully served his country in The United States Army during the Korean War. He then served for 42 years in The Pennsylvania National Guard, retiring as a Sergeant. Jerry was employed by the former Caloric Corporation, Topton for several years. For most of his career, Jerry was employed by The Borough of Kutztown, working at the water and sewage treatment facility and in his last couple of years, in the parks and recreation department until his retirement.

 

Jerry was a member of the Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion, Topton, and the former Bowers Lions Club, where he served as a former President. He was an animal lover, who loved his cats and enjoyed playing golf and smoking his pipe.

 

Jerry is survived by his twin children, Jill S. (Kern), widow of Norman H. Buck, Jr., and Jan L., husband of Connie L. (Behler) Kern, both of Mertztown; three grandchildren, Monica A. (Kern) Bojt, Justin P. Kern and Abbey E. (Buck), wife of Phil Bortz; three great-grandchildren, Lukas and Jakob Bojt and Zoey Bortz; and two sisters, Shirley M. (Kern), widow of Walter C. Delcamp, Kutztown, and Diane R. (Kern) Walbert, Hamburg.

 

A funeral service to celebrate and honor Jerry's life will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in Ludwick Funeral Homes and Cremation Care, Inc., 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown, with The Reverend Arthur L. Hahn officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Becker's St. Peter's Cemetery, Fleetwood (Richmond Township). Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing on Saturday from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
