The Life of Peter J McQuillin

Peter John McQuillin 77, died unexpectedly but exactly as he wished: while walking his dogs at his beloved Penn Forest Natural Burial Park, on January 8, 2022, of an aortic aneurysm. He was born in Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh on October 22, 1944, and lived most of his life in the Pittsburgh area. Pete is survived by his spouse, Nancy Chubb; his children, Tod (Kristen) McQuillin and Maureen Bailey; his stepchildren, Emma Chubb (Matt Cummings) and Nick Chubb (Chynna Sherry); grandchildren, Owen, Seth, Aubrie and Evan; brothers Luke (Susan McCabe) and John (Denise); and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents, John “Mac” and Nancy McQuillin, and his sister, Sandra. Pete loved people and loved to connect people with each other, and he loved his communities. He was the ultimate networker and joined and created many groups. He was a member of Kiwanis Clubs, Chambers of Commerce, and Community Development Corporations and often on the boards of these groups. He was an active member of several Unitarian Universalist congregations, most recently the Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church on the North Side and Sunnyhill in Mt. Lebanon. Pete’s passion for social justice led to his involvement with Pittsburgh United, Pittsburgh Interfaith Impact Network, Black and White Reunion, and many political campaigns. Pete dedicated the last 14 years of his life to the creation of Penn Forest Natural Burial Park. His entrepreneurial talents and environmental passions were critical to establishing the first all-green cemetery in Pennsylvania. He had previous careers with PPG in international sales and product management, at Menasha Packaging in new product development, and as a consultant in executive team building with Fourth River Associates. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. Pete will be interred on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at Penn Forest Natural Burial Park, the beautiful cemetery that he and Nancy, along with many others, built in Penn Hills. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Jaime Hahn of Hahn Funeral Home. His good friend, Dr. Rev. Patricia Brown of Spiritworks, will officiate a graveside service. In the true spirit of Pete, all are welcome to attend and speak. Puns and bad jokes are encouraged. In lieu of flowers, we welcome donations to Penn Forest Natural Burial Park, 227 Kansas St, Verona PA 15147, to help create a Remembrance Garden and encourage donations to other environmental groups.

Passion and vison

Pete had an incredible vision for Penn Forest. I remember working with him not long after he opened the cemetery and his energy and excitement were clear. It has been exciting to see his vision come to life. It was a pleasure to know him and to work with him. Pete has truly made a difference in our profession and in the lives of so many families that he has served.
