The Life of Belinda Madison

Dr. Belinda Joyce Madison, age 71, passed away on January 5, 2022 in West Chester, PA after a courageous battle with cancer.  She was born in Brooklyn, New York to Naomi Key Grandy and the late Prof. Francis H. Madison.

At an early age, Belinda accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was filled with the Holy Ghost.

Her early Christian development was shaped by her grandmother, Pastor Margie Key Baker of Keys Memorial Church of God in Christ in Rhode Island. As a child, she further developed in her Christian walk under the ministry of the late Dr. Richard L. Bratton: former Pastor of Holy Tabernacle Church of God in Christ in Brooklyn, New York. She later joined Open Door True Light Mission Church in Philadelphia where she was an active member and served faithfully under Bishop Maureen L. Davis.

Belinda was known as the fighter and protector of the family, enjoyed reading and learning, and was passionate about encouraging and helping others. She had a special way of making each person feel like they were her favorite and spoke life into everyone that she met. Throughout her battle with cancer, she remained strong, faithful, and lived her life to the fullest. Belinda leaves behind the legacy that no matter what, she was going to serve the Lord!

Belinda graduated Baruch College in New York NY, and continued her education at St. John’s University, where she received a Masters of Science in Counseling in Higher Education. Belinda ultimately received her Doctor of Philosophy, Professional Psychology from Union Institute and University in Cincinnati, OH. She went on to establish a private counseling practice and worked for over a decade at Lincoln University as the Assistant Director of Counseling Services and Women’s Center.

The cherished memory of Belinda continues through her devoted family, including her children, Dr. Ian (Jennifer) Gibbs, Ryan (Jennifer) Gibbs, and Brittany (David) Forman and six grandchildren (Cameron, Brennan, Samuel, Sophia, Gabriel, and Grace) her mother, Naomi Grandy; her sisters, Paulette (Ray) Veney, Frances (Michael) Brown, Claudia Madison, Margo Madison-Fairrer, and a host of other beloved family and friends.

Prayer

To the family I'm so sorry for your loss. I remember her as a very encouraging, spiritual, lover of God. Not ashamed of the gospel. She helped me through seminary.  I saw her a month ago and she said pray for me. We  prayed in the supermarket.

She said I'm OK with this.

God bless and keep you.

Pastor KJ

Our Reflection

Dr. Madison was a beautiful woman. She encouraged our family at every chance she got. Picturing her dancing for joy in the front of the church makes us smile thinking that she is finally dancing with Jesus. As a family raising strong women, the Galat family drew such strength from this Black, female doctor who was both spiritual and intellectual. She was a trailblazer. A nurturer. An unapologetic light. A kind face we can see in our mind’s eye even now. We are grateful to God for loving us enough to put Dr. Madison in our lives for the past seventeen years. And we are grateful to God at the thought that we will see her again someday.
