The Life of Gladys Johnson

 

Gladys Miriam Johnson, age 80, of Prospect Park, Pa., passed away peacefully on November 22, 2021 at Little Flower Manor in Darby where she had been a resident for 6 1/2 years. She was the daughter of Edward Reuben Johnson and Lydia Powell Johnson.

She is survived by her brother, the Rev. Harvey O. Johnson; sister-in-law Antoinette; sister Karen Johnson Gittens; two nieces; one nephew; and three grandnieces.

Gladys was a 1959 graduate of Interboro High School.  She earned her B.S. in Education from Grove City College, a Masters in Education from Temple University, and a second Masters Degree in English Folklore from the University of Pennsylvania.  She taught at Harris Elementary School for 30 years.

A life long member of Olivet Presbyterian Church, she served as an Elder, worked in Vacation Bible School and sang in the choir.  Her love of music was expressed by her membership in both the Ridley and West Chester Community Choruses.

She used her skill playing the guitar for some of the children's performances at Hedgerow Theater and for the residents of Little Flower Manor where she was known for her friendship to others, pleasant personality and love of reading.

Gladys was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and was a Charter Member of the Sons of Norway Lodge # 555 where she served as president and historian.  In her later years she was a member of the Red Hat Society and the Pool Ladies at the Ridley YMCA.

Interment will be at Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill, Pa.
