The Life of MICHAEL J MCDERMOTT

Michael J. McDermott, 62, of Bernville, passed away unexpectedly on November 21, 2021. He was the husband of Maria (Oros) McDermott for over 35 years. Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Jerome McDermott and Marguerite (Spencer) McDermott. He attended Governor Mifflin High School and continued his education graduating from the PA Apprenticeship Program. He continued on to receive his Masters degree in Plumbing and Heating and various other certificates in the trade. Mike started his career at W.F. Naugle & Sons and soon after he started his own business, McDermott Mechanical. He co-owned Berkshire Mechanical which later was acquired by UGI, working as their General Manager, which he retired from over 30 years. He didn’t stay retired long and moved on to become a Manager of Building and Grounds for UGI. He enjoyed serving on the Reading Berks Plumbing Apprenticeship Committee for many years. Mike spent his free time traveling and hiking with his wife, Maria. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at his cabin in the mountains at North Central PA, which he just finished renovating. Everyone who knew Mike knew he had a mechanical ability to pretty much fix anything. He always tried to make himself available. He is survived by his daughter, Courtney, fiancé to Matt Spatz, of Sinking Spring and his son, Colin, of Philadelphia. Other survivors include brother, Jim McDermott, of West Chester; two sisters, Marianne McGoldrick, wife of David of Havertown and Therese Matthew, wife of Troy of Wernersville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Guardian Angels Roman Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Gethsemane Cemetery. A visitation will be held Tuesday from 8 to 9:45 a.m. at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading.
