The Life of GENE GOODE BURT

Gene Burt, 88, passed away October 15, 2021, at MercyOne Hospice from cancer. He was born on May 25, 1933, in Des Moines, to James and Clara (Goode) Burt.

He graduated from Polk City School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Gene married Erma Johnson on June 21, 1952. He retired from Firestone after working there for 44 years.

Gene was an avid golfer throughout his adult life and was a charter member of the Ankeny Golf and Country Club. He enjoyed six holes-in-one during his golfing career and enjoyed traveling to golf resorts with family and friends. Gene was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Ankeny.

Gene was an enthusiastic sports fan who followed baseball, football, college basketball, and his favorite, the Iowa Hawkeyes. Above all else, his greatest joy was his family.

He was preceded in death by Erma, his wife of 68 years; his parents; brothers, Paul, Don, Glenn, and Jack; sisters, Pauline Bowersox, Donna Geisler, Sue Burt, and Ellen Johnson; and son-in-law, Ernest John Youngblut.

Gene is survived by his children, Kim (Dan) Bach, Mike (Diane) Burt and Lori (Stephen Schloemer) Youngblut; grandchildren, Brad (Katherine) and Andy (Sarah) Bach, Bailey (Vince) Abben, Ben, Hannah and Sam Burt, and Katie (John) Culviner; great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Camryn and Oliver Bach, Aiden and Asher Abben, and Audrey and James Culviner; as well as his sister, Barb Carlson, and brother, Roger (Sharon) Burt.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt and grateful thank you to the staff at Mercy Hospice for their compassionate care Gene received during his final days of life.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 6, 2021, at Ankeny Faith United Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m., followed by interment at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Following the interment, a celebration of Gene’s life will be held at Ankeny Golf and Country Club from 1-3 p.m.
