The Life of JOHN ROLLIN NIXON
John R. Nixon, 60, passed away August 28, 2021, at Unity Point Iowa Methodist.
John was born November 28, 1960, in Shenandoah, Iowa to John “Jack” and Virginia (Reyes) Nixon. He attended high school in Glenwood, Iowa where he was very active in sports. John especially enjoyed football and wrestling. He went to state in wrestling. During his senior year, his family moved to Des Moines where he graduated from Lincoln High School. John went on to AIB and graduated with a degree in business. He worked for Sears for over 20 years and most recently for the HyVee Pharmacy Fulfillment Center.
John loved the outdoors. He enjoyed time spent with his sons while they were in Boy Scouts. John was an avid reader and especially enjoyed Science Fiction. He also loved woodworking. Above all, John was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather.
John is survived by his wife, Colleen McNew-Nixon; children, Richard Greenly, Nick Nixon, Sean Purcella, Sarah McNew, Jack Nixon, Catherine Nixon, Ella Nixon and Violet Nixon; granddaughter, Sophia; brother, Frank (Yvonne) Nixon; sister, Julie (Wray) Childers; and a host of extended family and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Suzan Greenly Nixon.
The family will greet friends Tuesday, September 7, 2021, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Avenue in Des Moines. John will be laid to rest at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family respectfully asks guests to wear masks and practice social distancing.
