The Life of Evelyn H. Adams

Evelyn Marie Hines Adams was born to the late Cornelius Milton Hines and Helen Marie Hines on June 22, 1933. Following a brief illness, Evelyn peacefully went to be with TheLord at Providence Rehabilitation Center on June 28, 2021.

Evelyn was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and raised in Darby Township where she spent most of her life. Evelyn attended public schools and graduated from RidleyTownship High School in June 1951. Evelyn also graduated from Cheyney State Collegein May 1955 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and furthered her education at Temple University. Her entire teaching career was spent in The School District of Philadelphia first at the Meade School and then the Add B. Anderson School. Evelyn’s motto was “knowledge is power”. Evelyn was passionate and devoted to teaching her students. She kept a library of books at home from which she would prepare teaching materials to make sure her students would “learn something”. She also was empathetic to the home and family circumstances of students providing warm clothes, guidance, and an“ear” to many a troubled young soul. She retired on January 4,1991 after 35 years to enjoy travel, reading, social events and listening to classical music.

Evelyn married in 1954 and to that union were born her daughter, Cheryl Lorraine Gaston and son, D. Douglas Gaston, IV. Evelyn was a loving mother to Cheryl and Doug. To Evelyn, the best days were when her children were born. She brought the same passionshe had for teaching to raising her children to love learning and reading. Evelyn madesure her children knew there was a “big world” out there of which they should play anactive part. Evelyn took her children to plays, concerts, and cultural events andencouraged their musical pursuits-for Cheryl it was piano and Doug with the drums. Sheencouraged them to pursue higher education and their dreams. Evelyn was theenormously proud mother of two lawyers. She also made sure her children were raised inthe church and spiritually grounded. Evelyn was a lifetime active member of Mt. Zion C.M.E. Church where she taught SundaySchool, played the organ for choirs, and was a member of The Busy Bee Club, The

Missionary Society and The Usher Board. She was also a member of Zeta Phi BetaSorority; Delaware County Chapter of Cheyney University Alumni Association - Class of1955; The Roving Readers; two Red Hat Groups; and The Darby Township GoodNeighbor Center. Evelyn was affectionately known as “Madam Butterfly” by family and close friends. Evelynwas also known as the “card” lady! Evelyn would send a card to those she loved andcherished. If there was an occasion that was special to you, Evelyn would send a card toshow her love and care. Evelyn was also a fashionista! She loved wearing beautifuldresses, the most stylish shoes, and her matching hats. Pearls were Evelyn’s signaturejewelry. Evelyn believed every woman, young or old, should have pearls and, she has alarge collection of necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings gifted to her for Birthdays,special occasions, and Christmas. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, her brother Cornelius Milton Hines, Jr., anephew Darrell David Hines (Sheila) and former spouse Rufus J. Adams. Evelyn is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Cheryl L. Gaston; her son D. DouglasGaston, IV (Michele); sisters Gloria H. Potts (Erwin) and Lois Marriott; brother BernardHines (Helen); grandchildren Charles Gaston (Sylvia), Corinne Gaston and Mariel Gaston,TaJae Bryant (Hillary), and Najeh Fowler; great grandson Tavaune D. Griffin; three great-great grandchildren; an Aunt Alice Winchester; nieces Jacquelynn Hines and Lesley-AnnCisse, a nephew Vincent Hines (Daffodil), cousins, a godchild, great nieces, a greatnephew and a host of loved ones and friends. Evelyn is also survived by former spouse D.Douglas Gaston, III, the father of Cheryl and Doug.
