York - Bertha "Bert" Elizabeth (Cotton) Childs Aspin entered into rest on January 11, 2021 at the age of 95.

Bert was the daughter of the late William List Cotton, Sr. and Jessie May Allen Cotton. She was born December 24, 1925 in Wheeling, West Virginia. In addition to Wheeling, WV, Bert is formerly of Baltimore, MD, Towson, MD, and Saverna Park, MD. She was a longtime resident of York, Pennsylvania.

She was united in marriage to the late Thomas Linwood Childs, Sr. on September 6, 1946 in Baltimore and they had three children: Beverly A. Dempwolf, Thomas L. Childs, Jr., and Robert W. Childs. Bert and Thomas had 28 beautiful years together before he passed away in October 1974. Later, Bert married Frank Aspin and she embraced two step-children: Barbara L. Conaway and Jane E. Donahue.

Bert graduated from Eastern High School in Baltimore in June 1943. She worked for the U.S. Treasury Department in Baltimore, the Anne Arundel Community College in Saverna Park, and she retired in 1981 from the West York Area School District in York. She was a member of the York County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees. Bert was an avid golfer and former member of the Grandview Ladies 9-Hole Golf Club. She was also a former member of St. John Episcopal Church.

Bert was preceded in death by her parents; husband Thomas Childs; husband Frank Aspin; brothers Guy Allen Cotton and William L. Cotton, Jr.; sister Ann Virginia C. Henschen; and sons Thomas Childs Jr. and Robert Childs. She was survived by daughter Beverly Dempwolf and husband John of York; daughter-in-law Karen Childs of York; step-daughters Barbara Conaway of York and Jane Donahue and husband Dave of Akron; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; close friend Dick Martin; and many other loving friends and family.

Private family services will be held. Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to St. John Episcopal Church (140 N. Beaver St., York, PA 17401), the SPCA, or the Salvation Army.
