The Life of Helen Goumas Landry

Helen Goumas Landry, 91, of East Providence, RI and former long time Ansonia resident, passed away peacfully Monday July 13, 2009. Born in New Haven July 1, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Sidney and Katherine Jacobs Goumas and sister of the late Peter Goumas. Helen graduated from Ansonia High School Class of 1936. She was the widow of Alonzo E. "Jack" Landry. Helen and Jack made their home in Ansonia from their wedding in 1945 until 1976 moving to New Haven for the next 29 years. In 2005 after her husband of 60 years died. Helen moved to East Providence, RI to be near her daughter. In 1967 Helen and Jack took over the family business, Goumas Food Store in Ansonia's North End. They operated the store until 1976, she then worked for Sikorsky Aircraft until her retirement in 1989. Helen loved the 'Arts' and was a long time patron of the Shubert Theater in New Haven. She was also a great sports fan following the New York Giants in both baseball and football. She later became a NY Mets fan and was a New Haven Ravens season ticket holder while living in New Haven. She also enjoyed watching and attending UConn Women's Basketball games. She was an actie member of the First United Methodist Church in Ansonia. Helen is survived by her son, Wayne Landry and his wife Ellen of Naugatuck; daughter Donna Euell of Seekonk, MA; gradsons Michael Euell of Seekonk, MA, Jeffrey Landry and his wife Krista of Waterbury and Eric Cuell and his wife Lindsay of Providence, RI and great-grandaughters, Hannah and Mariella Landry of Waterbury. The serivce is Friday July 17th in the Jenkins King & Malerba Funeral Home, Ansonia. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery, Ansonia.
