The Life of Sonia Duran

Obituary

 Sonia Duran departed this life on Saturday, 12th September 2020. “Sugar”, as she

was affectionately called, was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 9th1961

to the late Antoina Rivera, a devoted mother and housemaker. Her family moved

to Sunset Park in the 1970’s where she was raised and schooled.

Sonia was blessed with a loving family and two daughters who she taught to be

outgoing, creative and forward thinking. In the summers Sonia often spent very

long days on the beach with her parents and daughters, enjoying the salty ocean

breeze and sunsets at Coney Island. In the early 1990’s these moments lead Sonia

to move to Coney Island with her daughters, enabling her to be closer to her

parents and the ocean.

Sonia was a free spirit and jokester at heart who loved to cook for her family and

always made enough food to feed her entire neighborhood. She was kind and giving

with a larger than life personality. Those in need of shelter, a warm plate of food

or just a good laugh was always welcomed in her home.

After the passing of her parents Sonia moved to Philadelphia. There she was able to

immerse herself in the care of the elderly and spent nearly two decades fulfilling

a lifelong dream of working as a CNA (certified nurse’s assistant) at Doylestown

Manor Nursing. Sonia spent the remainder of her life in Philadelphia as a nurse,

grandmother, an avid horse lover, an admirer of butterflies and an adoring friend.

Sonia is survived by her daughters Crystal T. Rodriguez and Indira R. Schorsch;

her son in law Nicholas S. Schorsch Jr; her granddaughters Serenity Emmalise

Rodriguez, Elyzah Jayde Carrasco, Brielle Malia Cordero and Taina Milani

Cordero; her grandson Nicholas S. Schorsch III; her brother Daniel C. Sanchez;

her sister Louisa D. Sanchez; her nieces Maria A. Hernandez, Ruth E. Mullen

and Crystal F. Rodriguez; her nephews Joshua O. Rivera, Edgardo Rodriguez Jr

and Jose D. Rodriguez and Angelica M. Galarza, her adoptive mother.

She is preceded in death by her mother Antonia Rivera; her stepfather

William Young; her sister Carmen Rivera; her brother Angel Rivera and
