The Life of Jr. Sanford J. Wakeman

Sanford Jennings Wakeman, Jr., age 81, of Fairfield, beloved husband of 50 years of Karen Ostrosky Wakeman, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 20, 2019, surrounded by his family. Born in Bridgeport, the son of the late Sanford J. Wakeman, Sr and Grace Dowlin Wakeman, he had been a lifelong Fairfield resident. He graduated from Roger Ludlowe High School in 1957 and served for five years in the U.S. Air Force including two tours on what was known as the “Texas Towers.” Sandy was employed at the Jelliff Corporation in Southport as a machinist, retiring after 37 years. He was a long-time member of First Church Congregational where he sang in the youth choir, taught Sunday school and was active in Boy Scout Troop 82. Sandy enjoyed fishing and clamming, bee keeping, reading and camping. He served two terms on the Fairfield Shellfish Commission. Survivors in addition to his loving wife Karen include four beloved children, Jeffrey Wakeman (Marion), Cheryl Wakeman-Smith (Roy), Andrea Wakeman-Kitchen (Edward) and Cindy Wakeman (Anthony D’Andrea); 8 cherished grandchildren, Sarah, Elise, Daniel, Adelaide, Roland, Kyle, Emmalyn and Sage. A funeral service will be held Monday, November 25, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. in the Spear-Miller Funeral Home, 39 South Benson Road, Fairfield with the Rev. David Spollett officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday from 3-7 p.m. Sandy had his own “sense of fashion” with plaid flannel shirts.
