The Life of DURENE ELAINE KASNER OAKES

Durene Elaine Schroeder Kasner Oakes, 83, passed away at home on November 2, 2019. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, November 7 at Iles Grandview Park Chapel with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial of Durene along with the cremated remains of her husbands, Fritz Kasner and E.J. Oaks, will be at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery following the service.

Durene was born in Des Moines, IA on September 21, 1936 to Carl H. and Alberta (Yanney) Schroeder. She graduated from East High School in 1954. She worked for 21 years as a Media Associate for the Des Moines Public School System retiring in 1994.

She was a member of the Des Moines Public Schools Union; Grant Park Christian Church then the Altoona Christian Church, the Highland Park American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and DOES Auxiliary 20 of the Elks Club. Following retirement, Durene lived in Fallbrook, CA during the winter and volunteered at the Sheriff’s Substation. She enjoyed oil painting, reading, camping, and flower gardening.

Durene was preceded in death by her first husband, Fritz Kasner to whom she was married from 1955 until his death in 1998 and E.J. Oakes to whom she was married until his death in 2012. She is survived by three daughters, Kimberly Kasner, Kurene Welter, and Cathy (Alan) Porter; three sisters, Karen (John) Adamson of Des Moines, Carla Miller of Henderson, NV and Marlene (Fred) Rivas of Des Moines; 11 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and many extended family members and friends.
