The Life of Nancy Jane Elizabeth Garrett

Nancy Garrett, a former domestic worker, died on Thursday, July 4, 2019, at Symphony Square in Bala Cynwyd. She was 96.

She was born on Dec. 23, 1922, in Amissville, Virginia, to the late Eugene and Bessie Parker. She was one of nine children. She went to school in Virginia. She helped raise her brothers and sisters until the family moved to Philadelphia. She continued to visit her grandparents from time to time in Amissville.

She had a daughter that she named after her mother, Bessie. She met and married the late Hubert Speller and from that union Hubert Speller was born. She later divorced Hubert and married the late Reveredy Garrett.

Garrett belonged to Aquatics, a social club that traveled, put on extravagant fashion shows and performed countless community services.

Garrett loved celebrating family gatherings such as birthdays and holidays including special occasions with her family. She was able to live a lavish life by doing domestic work.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, Mary, James, Bill, Eugene, Walter, Lillian and Allan.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by: her son-in-law, Edward Fisher; daughter-in-law, LaRaine Speller-Calhoun; grandchildren, Timmy (Kali), Lynn, Joy, Vincent, Val, Kyle, Shiela and Gary (Shelly); 24 great-grandchildren; 27 great-great grandchildren; three great-great-great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Douglas; sister-in-law, Inez Parker; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be held July 12 at 11 a.m. at West Laurel Hill Funeral Home, 225 Belmont Ave., Bala Cynwyd. Burial is in West Laurel Hill Cemetery.
