The Life of Richard Arthur Schwartzbeck

Richard A. Schwartzbeck, Ph.D.

Richard (Dick) Schwartzbeck, age 86, died on February 8, 2019 in Olathe, Kansas surrounded by his loving wife of 63 years and their three great sons.

He was born on Feb. 29, 1932 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Arthur and Lydia Schwartzbeck, the last of four children. He attended Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin High School, graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison with a Bachelor and Master of Science degree in Agricultural Chemistry and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis in Soil Chemistry. He then spent time as a Post Doctoral student in the School of Public Health.

Dick was active in tennis and basketball and marching band in high school and college and received his "W" letter in tennis at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee his freshman year. During his working career he was involved in research and development of agricultural chemicals with several corporations throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. He lived in many U.S. states and traveled extensively. Late in his career he became interested in agricultural law and during retirement he became an arbitrator being on the Panel of Neutrals for the American Arbitration Association.

During the years when his sons were growing up he was involved with Cub and Boy Scouts, Indian Guides, Little League, Good Samaritan Society of Olathe (board), American Philatelic Society, Volunteer in the Olathe Public Schools in Chemistry and Math, and at St. Marks Lutheran Church activities also being on the Church Council. 

Dick is survived by his wife Ginny of 63 years, sons Ralph (Katherine) of Atlanta, GA; Dr. Robert (Marilyn) of Houston, TX; John (Ellen) of Andover, KS; and their respective families consisting of a total of 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at 11:30am at St. Marks Lutheran Church in Olathe, KS with a visitation from 10-11:30am. Interment at Olathe Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial gifts to St. Marks Lutheran Church Organ Fund or the Good Samaritan Society of Olathe, KS.
