The Life of Barbara A. Cunningham

Barbara Ann Ogburn-Cunningham was born in 1943 on the sixth day of January to the late William and Mabel Ogburn in Philadelphia, PA. Barbara was the first of seven siblings born in a loving Christian household where family values were important to everyone. Barbara was baptized at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Philadelphia when she was a young child. Although Barbara was not affiliated with a church, she had a love for God and knew where to lean for strength in times of need during her life.
Barbara was educated in the Philadelphia School System. She received her High School Diploma from John Bartram High School.
Barbara and her family enjoyed traveling to Virginia, North Carolina and New York to visit her mother’s extended family during the summer months. The family would travel by bus, car or train and Barbara enjoyed the adventures of their traveling back and forth. She had fond memories that she cherished and often talked about and shared with her children and nieces and nephews.
Barbara also traveled to family reunions on her father’s side of the family, as well. The House of Ogburn (HOO) is a family organization with extensive rich history. Barbara attended the first reunion as a baby in Mecklenburg County Virginia. She is seen in a family historic photo sitting on her mother’s lap while her father served our Country in the Navy. The HOO reunions are held every other year during Labor Day weekend and still continue today.
Barbara was a loving wife to JB Cunningham and from their union two sons were born, Cary and Gary. Barbara had an unbreakable bond with her sons. She supported them in all causes from their infancy to adulthood. They kept a smile on her face.
As a tradition to Barbara’s upbringing, she traveled with her sons and family to Wildwood, New Jersey and New York, which were some of her favorite places to visit. Barbara was an avid reader. She had a love for music especially by the late great Michael Jackson. She had an awesome sense of humor with a contagious laugh attached to it.
Barbara was employed by Majestic Oaks Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for over 25 years. She was a dedicated employee with a passion for caring for the elderly and people with disabilities. She was a nurturer to her own adult son with special needs and transferred her personal experiences to her professional life.
Barbara was preceded in death by her nephew Eric J. Ogburn, the son of her brother Barry Ogburn.
The chain of seven children has been broken by one, as of January 26, 2019, when the Lord said come on up Barbara and greet me and your loved ones! For your work on earth is done…
Barbara leaves behind to cherish her legacy, her two sons, Gary and Cary Cunningham; four sisters Williamae Jenkins, Patricia Bivings, Faye Ogburn, Sandra Ogburn; two brothers William (Billy) Ogburn, and Barry Ogburn and his wife Carolyn Ogburn; two paternal aunts, LaVerne Hudson and Yvonne Simmons; nieces and nephews and a host of extended family and friends.
