The Life of Dr. Edward R. Hagopian

Edward Raymond Hagopian, 88, of Garnet Valley, PA

Edward Raymond (Yervant) Hagopian, 88, died Sunday December 24, 2018 at his home in
Garnet Valley, PA.

Born October 29, 1930 in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of Hagop Hagopian and Victoria
Hagopian. He was the son of immigrants, Hagop and Victoria, who escaped the Armenian
genocide in Turkey in 1923, with their two children Florence and George, unfortunately losing
their first son in Turkey, Hampartsum, at the age of 1.

Edward, or as he liked to be called, Eddie, grew up in Philadelphia, PA with his three beloved siblings, Florence, George, and Rose.
He attended high school in Philadelphia and then graduated from University of Pennsylvania to
then go on to medical school at Jefferson Medical College. From there he graduated in 1956,
and then stayed at Jefferson to complete a residency in General Surgery with the well-known
Dr. John Gibbons, the then Chair of Surgery at Jefferson. Dr. Hagopian participated in the
earliest works in developing the heart-lung perfusion machine with Dr. Gibbons, which lead to
modern open-heart surgery. An accomplished thoracic surgeon, Dr. Hagopian also studied
under Dr. Denton Cooley at the Texas Heart Institute.

Although Dr. Hagopian’s accomplishments in Medicine and Surgery were countless, his love of his family and of the Lord
Jesus surmounted all. A long-time Deacon and Member of the Westminster Presbyterian
Church in Wilmington, DE, he grew up a member of the Armenian Martyrs Congregational
Church, where he remained faithful to his Armenian heritage and family.

He is survived by his 3 children Sharon Victoria Bettcher (m. Harold), Bruce Edward Hagopian,
and Dr. Ellen Joyce Hagopian-Cacciarelli (m. Armand); 4 grandchildren Rachel Leah Bettcher,
Michael Patrick Bettcher, Alexandra Rae Cacciarelli, and Theo Hagop Cacciarelli; in addition to
sisters Florence Nevart Samuelian and Rose Sievart Snyder. He was preceded in death by his
wife, Marguerite Joyce and brothers George Nubar and Hampartsum.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday January 20, 2019 at 2pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1502 W 13th St, Wilmington, DE 19806.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributionsmay be made to the
