The Life of John W Fogarty

John W. "Chinna" Fogarty, 97, of New Philadelphia, passed away Sunday evening at Orwigsburg Center.

Born in New Philadelphia, Aug. 4, 1921, he was a son of the late John and Isabelle Clements Fogarty.

He was a graduate of Holy Family Grade School, 1938, Blythe Township Middle School, 1939; Blythe Township High School, 1941; veteran of the Marine Corps, serving basic training for 13 weeks at Paris Island, S.C.; attained the rank of sergeant with the 4th Marine Div., 21st Marine Unit in the South Pacific for 14 months, serving from March 12, 1942, until March 11, 1946.

John was self-employed before working for Alcoa for 26 years before it closed in 1977, and was employed by Saint Clair School District as a maintenance man and school bus driver before retiring.

He was a three-year letterman in high school, starring in football and track, a member of the 1939 state championship football team and the 1940 undefeated team; a guest and interviewed at Fordham and St. Bonaventure colleges, both of New York; he also received letters from Penn State, Villanova and Temple; also being mentioned at Perdue and Pitt. In writing his own obit, John requested to include he was avid die-hard fan of Notre Dame since boyhood.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, being married May 30, 1947, in Holy Family Church, Catherine "Peggy" Bensinger Fogarty.

John is survived by a son, John Fogarty and wife, Mary Jo, Tamaqua; daughter, Kathleen Fogarty, New Philadelphia; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sister, Isabelle Murray, Pottsville; nieces and nephews.

Military honors and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church with the Rev. Ronald J. Minner as celebrant. Viewing will be from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Thomas J. Bartashus Funeral Home, New Philadelphia. Interment with military honors will be in Schuylkill Memorial Park, Schuylkill Haven. In memory of John, the family requests donations may be given to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
