The Life of Russell L. Heiter

Russell L. Heiter, 77, of Greenwich Township, passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, November 13, 2018. He was the loving husband of Carole A. (Zettlemoyer) Heiter, whom he married on April 22, 1961. Born on a farm in Perry Township, Russell was a son of Perma H. (Heinly) Heiter German, of Millersville, and the late Ethan O Heiter. Russell was a 1958 graduate of Fleetwood Area High School, and attended Lighthouse Community Church, Lyons.

He was a lifelong dairy farmer in Greenwich Township. Russell was a member of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, a member of the Greenwich Township Zoning Hearing Board, and was actively involved with the Berks County Patriots. A dedicated family man, Russell was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, who was well known for his joke telling and welcoming personality. You could often find Russell on his front porch watching the cars drive by on Rt. 737, or in his kitchen, where he loved to entertain his family and friends. He also had a love for his dog and cats, and fishing.

He will be missed dearly by his wife of 57 years, Carole; mother, Perma; his four children, Nadine (Heiter), wife of Jay King, Kempton, Michael, husband of Karen (Hower) Heiter, Kempton, Dawn (Heiter), wife of Barry Mengel, Kutztown, and Melanie (Heiter), wife of John Ross, New Ringgold; his 17 grandchildren, Darwin Haas, Benjamin Haas, Lucas, husband of Sarah (Kershner) Heiter, Jacob, husband of Shannon (Friend) Heiter, Joshua Heiter, Matthew, husband of Sheila (McQueen) Heiter, Elijah, husband of Amanda (Smith) Heiter, Sarah (Heiter), wife of Wade Moyer, Samuel Heiter, Abigail Heiter, Rebekah Heiter, Joseph Mengel, Corissa (Mengel), wife of Jacob Dixon, Amelia (Mengel), wife of Jordan Rice, John "Jack" Ross, Jr., Theodore Ross and William Ross; and his 27 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his sister, Donna (Heiter), wife of Clyde Smith, Millersville; and his two step-sisters, Stacey (German) Potteiger and Mary (German) Dillon. In addition to his father, Russell was predeceased by his infant grandson, Thomas Michael Heiter, and a sister, Catherine (Heiter) Schlottman.

A funeral service to celebrate Russell's life will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown, with his long-time friend, Pastor Alton R. Zentner officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be held on Monday, Nov. 19, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Peter's UCC Cemetery, 219 Maidencreek Road, Fleetwood (Richmond Township).

The family requests contributions be made in Russell's memory to the Russell L. Heiter Memorial Fund c/o Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., P.O. Box 292, Kutztown, PA 19530-0292 to be used in the future to benefit children's hospitals.
