The Life of Gerald Doyne Ham

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 9th, 2018 at 2 pm in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Gerald Doyne Ham. He was called home by his Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 7th at the age of 90 following a brief illness.

Reverend Scott Bullock of First United Methodist Church of New Iberia will be leading the service.

Gerald proudly served his country in the United States Navy aboard a supply ship and was present during Operation Crossroads (atomic bomb testing in the Bikini Islands). He was honored to be able to go to Washington DC in 2008 as part of the Honor Air Flight program for World War II veterans.

He moved to Lafayette, LA in 1962 from Beebe, Arkansas and lived here until 2015. At that time he moved to New Iberia, LA and became a member of Azalea Estates Assisted Living Community where he spent his final years. He very quickly became a “social butterfly” and gained some very dear friends. He loved to participate in the many activities and picked up a few nicknames along the way including “Mr. Mardi Gras” and he was chosen by the residents as this year’s Valentine King. He had a long career as a manufacturer’s representative for several furniture lines and traveled the state of Louisiana and surrounding areas. When he came off the road he worked for Viking Distributors until his retirement. He loved to go camping and was a member of Cruisin Cajuns Motorcoach Club. His greatest love was spending time with his family and being extremely devoted to his wife Mary Lea who was the love of his life. It was rare to see one without the other. They were blessed to have 61 years together and they never wasted a minute of it. They were truly amazing parents and grandparents.

He is survived by two daughters, Kay Wolf and husband Dicky of New Iberia and Annette Landreaux and husband Earl of Lafayette, five grandchildren Sean Gilder and wife Mindi, Richard Wolf Jr, Corey Arceneaux and wife Jenny, Daniel Arceneaux and fiancé Tanja, Kristen Oalman and husband Jeff, eight great grandchildren Aries Gilder, Gavin, Dawson and Evelyn Arceneaux, Gabriella Arceneaux and Devin, Dylan and Brenan Oalman and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Burton and Rachel Ham and one brother Charles Ham, brothers and sisters in laws, Osie and Notra Shelton, Walter and Novella Robertson and Ray and Juanita Jackson.

The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to the entire staff of Azalea Estates, Dr. Greg Riggs and the staff of Lafayette Internal Medicine and the 5th floor North nursing staff at Our Lady of Lourdes for the compassion and level of care that was given to him.

Visitation will be Saturday, June 9th form 10 am until the time of service at Delhomme Funeral Home in Lafayette.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Iberia Council on Aging, 126 West Washington Street, New Iberia LA 70560.

Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, Lafayette, LA is in charge of funeral arrangements.
