The Life of George C. Burwell Jr.

George C. Burwell, 88, of Greenwich Township, died suddenly Wednesday, May 23, 2018, after being stricken in his home.  He was the husband of Nancy J. "Nan" Schreier, whom he married September 1, 1979.  Born in Pine Grove Mills, Centre County, he was a son of the late George C., Sr., and Mae E. (Houser) Burwell.  He honorably and faithfully served his country first, as a Yeoman, third class, with the United States Navy; then as a Staff Sergeant with the United States Air Force, with service during the Korean War. George then began a military career with the Air National Guard Bureau of Pennsylvania, where he served over twenty years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. His total service time to our country was 28 years, 10 months, 16 days. George received a Bachelor's Degree in Business Education; followed by a Master's Degree in Higher Education Administration from Pennsylvania State University, State College, PA.  Mr.  Burwell first taught business education for three years in the Butler Area School District, Butler County, PA. He then accepted a position as Assistant Director of Placement with Pennsylvania State University, State College. He served over ten years. George went on to accept a position as Director of Career Development with Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, Kutztown, where he served over 19 years until his retirement in 1989.  An apiculturist, George enjoyed beekeeping on his property in Greenwich Township. He was also a gentleman farmer, never finding a plant he couldn't grow or didn't like.

In addition to his wife, Nan, of 38 years, George is survived by daughters, Cindy B. (Burwell), wife of Ron Koch, Reading; and Susan Burwell, wife of Seth Benz, Belfast, ME; a son, George C., III, husband of, Liz Coleman, North Attleboro, Mass. Other survivors include two sisters, Dawn (Burwell) Wells, Orlando, Fla; and Carol (Burwell), wife of Bill Zeigler, Pine Grove Mills, PA.  There are four grandchildren: Chelsea (Koch), wife of Ian Zink; Wesley Koch, companion of Erin Hill, Grant Burwell and Torrie Burwell.  There is also a great granddaughter, Ellyette Mae Zink.

A memorial service to celebrate George's life will be held on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at 3:00 p.m. from Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown, with Reverend Harry Heffelfinger, officiating. Relatives and friends may call 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. in the funeral home.  Military Honors will immediately follow the services.  Inurnment in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Lebanon County, will take place at the convenience of the family.

George had a fondness for animals. The family requests you make a donation in his memory to a charity of your choice relating to animals or animal rescue groups.

Farewell to a Valued Colleague

George was a valued colleague for many years while working at Kutztown University.  He was personable, knowledgeable, and dedicated to service.  He will be sorely missed.  May he Rest In Peace.  With deepest sympathy to his wife and family, Lisa Ladd-Kidder
