The Life of George W. Smyth

George W. Smyth, of Havertown, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on December 5th, 2017.

George was born in Philadelphia on April 27, 1939 to the late Mary (nee Courter) Smyth and George Washington Smyth. He graduated from Bartram High School in Philadelphia.

George served in the US Air Force from March 1957 to March 1961, serving in the 13th Bomber Wing at Johnson Air Force Base in Japan and in Kenusan, South Korea. He also served in the 98th Fighter Wing in Dover, Delaware.

He worked at James H. Matthews for 20 years, as well as the Philadelphia Inquirer for 21 years. George was also a member of Troop 49 Boy Scouts of America Alumni group.

Mr. Smyth also loved the Philadelphia Eagles and was a season ticket holder for 56 years. George was fondly nicknamed “Generous George” by his children, as he was always willing to go above and beyond to help others. He consistently told others that his greatest accomplishment was his children. He had a great sense of humor; his family and friends told others just how much he has enriched their lives and always brought a smile to their faces.

George is the beloved husband of 52 years to Patricia (neeAllen)Smyth and the loving father of Melissa (Chris) Washburn, Michael (Annie Heck) Smyth, Mandy (Adam) Sharp, and the late Matthew Smyth, as well a devoted grandfather of Lena Kinser, Nicholas Washburn, Lucas Washburn, Aidan Sharp, Colin Sharp, and Gavin Sharp.

Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 9:30 am and to a Liturgy Service following at 11am in the Church of the Holy Apostles 1020 Remington Road Wynnewood, PA. 19096.

Interment: Private.
