The Life of Esther Katz

Esther Katz died on Saturday, May 19, at 102 years old.  Born Esther Glider on August 8, 1915 and raised in South Philadelphia, Esther became well-known on “Fashion Row” for her dress store, “Esther’s.”  She was also renowned for her skills as a seamstress, making many outfits without ever using a pattern, including all of her own clothes; curtains;  upholstery; knitting sweaters and blankets; and for her matzoh-ball soup, quick wit and loyal friendships.  She is predeceased by her first husband, Jack Freedman, her second husband, Morris “Dolly” Katz, and her older daughter, Judy Trachtenberg.  She is survived by her younger daughter, Diane Javian; her son-in-law Don Trachtenberg; four grandchildren, Julie and Jennifer Trachtenberg, Tom Javian and his wife Mary; Peter Javian and his wife Kathy; and five great-grandchildren, Janey Hecht, Zoe and Charlie Javian, and Tony and Jimmy Javian. We are all very fortunate to have had her in our lives for so long. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Planned Parenthood. Services are private.
