The Life of Jonathan Umholtz

Jonathan Umholtz, born in Gratz, Pa. and descendant of Heinrich Umholtz (progenator of the Umholtz family in America). While in Gratz, Jonathan was a farmer, operated a general store, and became one of the leading merchants of the town for 9 years. For thirteen years he served as postmaster, and was a census enumerator in 1880.
He left Gratz c1885 and engaged himself as proprietor of several different hotels. He operated hotels in Herndon, Pa. and Girardville, Pa. before settling in Philadelphia. In Philadelphia he operated a cigar store for several years, a boarding house where medical students from Hahnemann Medical College lived, as well as the Eagle Hotel that was located at N. Third Street.
Jonathan Umholtz died on May 20, 1918.ll/div>ll/div>
