The Life of Adam H Faust
Adam H. Faust, 87, of Orwigsburg, passed away Sunday while a resident of Seton Manor.
Adam was born Sept. 3, 1930, on his family farm in Pinedale. He was a son of the late Homer and Clara Berk Faust.
He was a graduate of Orwigsburg High School in 1948.
Adam was a loving husband to Anna J. Bachman Faust. Married July 13, 1952, Ann was the girl of his dreams and he enjoyed his last meal with her by his side. They would have celebrated 66 years of marriage.
He was a man of great integrity and was known for his hard work, love of the outdoors, and sense of community. He stood strong for what he felt was right and demonstrated kindheartedness to those in need. He worked for nearly his entire life, from tending to the fields and animals as a boy, to earning employee of the month when he was 80 years old at his final place of employment.
Adams was a Korean War veteran serving in the Marine Corps Eighth Battalion, Platoon 389. He was an aerographer, having trained at the Naval Air Technical Training Unit in Lakehurst, N.J., and also airman training in Jacksonville, Fla. He achieved the rank of Corporal E-3 and received the National Defense Service Medal and Marksman Medal.
He was first employed by Shultz's Grocery and then became a longtime employee of Sylray Co. in Orwigsburg as a machinist, working until the company's closure. Not wanting to retire and "take things easy," he began working for Staples Inc. upon its opening at the Cressona Mall. He worked there for 16 years until his health began to fail in 2014. He became a resident of Seton Manor in September 2014 and was voted "King of Hearts" this past Valentine's Day by his fellow Seton friends.
Adam was a devoted husband and father. He was his daughters' "Hero." Not only was he always there for support, understanding and advice, but he knew how to fix anything and everything from plumbing to electrical, to even an occasional "broken heart."
He was also devoted to his community, having served more than 65 years with Friendship Hose Company No. 1, Orwigsburg. The firehouse was his second home and his firefighters his second family. He served as fire chief for 22 years, retiring in 1997. During his service, he was dedicated to helping and protecting lives and property, never once thinking of the dangers he would face. Not even being severely injured while fighting the deadly 1959 tanker blast at Red Church would keep him from continuing his volunteer service to his community and nearby communities. He was active in the Fireman's Relief Association, a delegate to county and six county fireman's conventions, Hazmat instructor and fire training instructor. He also served as captain of the fire police, retiring in 2014. As well as his devotion to the Orwigsburg Fire Company, he was a member of many other county fire companies.
He was one of the first trained Emergency Medical Technicians in our area. He also was a first aid and CPR instructor, teaching many volunteer fire companies, Scouting packs and troops, and citizens the techniques to help someone in need.
Adam was also a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader and served as a Scout commissioner. He received the Silver Beaver Award for his service and dedication to the Scouts of America.
During his life, he was honored to receive the Lions Club Community Service Award; Outstanding Service Award from the Borough of Orwigsburg; and the Schuylkill Heroes Award.
Adam was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of Owl Hollow Hunting Camp and not only enjoyed hunting with the camp, but also enjoyed cooking for his fellow campmates.
He enjoyed going to his camper with his wife on weekends to watch the birds and animals. He loved flowers and gardening, especially red roses. His love for animals always found his home with a few "furry" family members.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy Faust Zimmerman; sisters, Mable Nagle and Ida Baver; brothers; Robert and Allen Faust; a grandson, Flynnigan Raess-Sausser.
Adams is survived by his wife of 65 years, Anna J. Bachman Faust, Orwigsburg; two daughters, Clara Ann, wife of Harold D. Sausser, Orwigsburg, and Connie, wife of Robert Frantz, Orwigsburg; his sister, Ethel Bliven, Rhode Island; grandchildren, Timothy Adam Sausser, husband of Michele, Nathan Sausser, Jeremy Sausser, husband of Stephani, Mark Sausser, husband of Sandy, Jason Frantz, Kimberly Messner, wife of Matthew, Jeffrey Zimmerman, husband of Michelle, and Cody Zimmerman, husband of Ashley; great-grandchildren, Katelyn, Allison and Lilyanna Sassuer, Indiana Raess-Sausser, Jakoby and Jakoda Sausser, Riley and Jacob Adam Sausser, Marion Sausser, Haley, Molly, and Chase Frantz, Logan, Luke, and Leo Messner, Adam and Paige Zimmerman.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Grabowski Funeral Home, off Route 61 in Schuylkill Haven. A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until the time of services. Interment will be private on the grounds of Schuylkill Memorial Park at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in Adam's name can be made to Friendship Hose Company No. 1, 121 N. Liberty St., Orwigsburg, PA 17961.
