The Life of Janet Alice Speers

Janet Alice Speers, 59, of Cambridge, MA, passed away peacefully at home with family by her side on Nov. 29, 2008. She was the daughter of Ruth H. Speers of Lansdowne, PA, and the late Robert W. Speers.

Born and raised in Lansdowne, PA, she attended Lansdowne Aldan High School and Pierce College, where she was a business major. She moved to Cambridge, MA, and started women’s apparel retail stores, including Clothware, Pepperweed, and Here to Maternity. She later became a job recruiter for Winter Wyman.

Among Ms. Speers interests was being an organizer and volunteer for “A Positive Spin for ALS,” an annual bike ride to raise research funds for ALS, the disease that claimed her life.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by a sister, Sandra Speers Schultz (Ken) of Accomac, VA, brother Jack Speers (Barbara) of Springfield, PA, and her longtime partner, Alfred Lewis of Newtown, MA. Other survivors include three nephews, three grandnieces, two grandnephews, and many devoted friends.

Ms. Speers cremated remains will be interred alongside those of her mother in a private ceremony at Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill, PA.

Janet and I were a couple for a memorable time around 1970. During our time together, I loved her and have always remembered her. Being young, nothing lasts it seems. Only recently I learned of her passing in 2008, so tragic. She will never be forgotten. Mike Belsky
