The Life of Kathryn M Scott


Kathryn M. Hyde Scott, 87, of Stroudsburg, formerly a lifelong resident of Schuyl-kill Haven, passed away peacefully Monday surrounded by her daughter, son-in-law and wonderful caregivers at Pleasant Valley Manor, Stroudsburg.

Born in Schuylkill Haven, May 11, 1927, she was a daughter of the late William and Oneida Meck Hyde.

She was a graduate of Schuylkill Haven High School, Class of 1945. 

She was the widow of Elwood N. Scott, who passed away Feb. 5, 2008. They were inseparable and loved to go fishing, out to eat, gamble and be with their family.

She was formerly employed by Stine's Pharmacy, Dr. Karl Albert and was last employed by Schuylkill Intermediate Unit 29, retiring in 1990.

Kathryn was a member of the former St. Matthew's Church, and a member of Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Schuylkill Haven. She served as a Sunday School teacher and youth group advisor at St. Matthew's and Jerusalem Lutheran Helpful Hands.

In addition to parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Dorothy (Hyde) Strouse, and Elizabeth (Hyde) Felty; a brother, Franklin Hyde.

Kathryn is survived by a daughter, Gloria Handling and her husband, Jeffrey, Stroudsburg; a son, Thomas Scott and his wife, Kimberly, Schuylkill Haven. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Tara Handling Amerman (Ben), Tanya Handling Wicks (Aaron), Tessa Kate Handling Moore (Jesse), Jordyn Scott Kriner (Jonathon), Tomara Scott and Chris Barker; 11 great-grandchildren, Derek and Rebekah Amerman, Quinn and Tobin Wicks, Lydia and Evelyn Moore, Rian Kriner, Danny Aregood Jr. and Makehla, Emagen and Shilah Barker; a brother-in-law, Ronald Scott, husband of Dolores, Tucson, Ariz.

Kathryn loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who lovingly referred to her as Mema. She loved visits from them and seeing their photos hanging around her room. 

Kathryn was never without a smile and was referred to as "Smiley," at Pleasant Valley Manor. Everyone who had the pleasure of being with Kathryn knew just how much she loved life. She enjoyed traveling, playing cards and visits with friends. She will be dearly missed by all who loved her.

A memorial prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Jerusalem Lutheran Church, Schuylkill Haven, with Pastor David Rowe officiating. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until the time of the service at the church. The family requests memorial donations be made to Jerusalem Lutheran Church, Dock Street, Schuylkill Haven, PA 17972.
