The Life of VERNARD GENE WILLIAMSON

V. Gene Williamson, 86, of Des Moines died at Mercy Medical Center on March 22, 2018. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 11 with visitation from 11 a.m. until service time. Burial will be at Highland Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Vernard Gene Williamson was born on September 14, 1931 to the late Buford and Grace (Freeman) Williamson of New Albany, IN. As the son of Salvation Army ministers, he lived in a variety of communities but considered Des Moines home. After graduating from high school, Gene served in the U.S. Air Force as an air traffic controller then went on to work as a lineman and foreman for Iowa Power and Light Company for 41 years.

Gene was a member of East Gate Masonic Lodge (Past Master), The Des Moines Consistory and the Za Ga Zig Shrine. He enjoyed golf, fishing and camping.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Helen; three sons, Michael of Washington state, Craig of Florida and Scott of Hawaii; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three siblings, Harriet, Frank and Wanda.
