The Life of VIOLET ELAINE BENSON

Violet Elaine Benson, 87, passed away Saturday, March 17, 2018, at her home at Courtyard Estates in Pleasant Hill.

Violet was born June 17, 1930, in Saskatchewan, Canada to George and Hazel (Mitchell) Leonard. As a young student, she attended a one room school house. She went on to graduate from Polk City High School. She married Robert Eugene Benson on November 19, 1953. She was a homemaker and a stay-at-home mom for most of her life. Violet was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was very social and independent. Her family was her first priority. Violet loved people and was a very kind and caring person. She was active in many organizations including the American Legion Auxiliary, many bowling leagues, and Eastern Star. She was a devout member of Altoona United Methodist Church. Violet enjoyed playing cards every Sunday, doing word searches and traveling with her husband, Robert.

She is survived by her children, Diane (Mike) Waterman and Ben (Debbie) Benson; grandchildren, Nicole Waterman, Brittany (fiancé Bryn Smith) Waterman, Alfred Thacker III, and Angie (Russ) Snodgrass; many great-grandchildren; and her sister, Bonnie Cordry.

Violet was preceded in death by her parents, George and Hazel Leonard; husband, Robert; and ten siblings.

There will be a visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at Hamilton’s near Highland Memory Gardens, 121 NW 60th Ave, Des Moines. Funeral service will begin at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 21st, also at Hamilton’s, with burial to follow at Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery.
