The Life of Elizabeth S. Mertz

Elizabeth S. "Betty" Mertz, 95, of Kutztown, passed away on Monday, December 4, 2017 in Berks Heim, Leesport. She was the widow of Warren J. Mertz, who died on March 27, 1998. Born in Maxatawny Township, Betty was a daughter of the late William and Ada B. (Reppert) Wartzenluft. Mrs. Mertz was a member of Saint John's Lutheran Church, Kutztown. She worked as a sewing machine operator at the former Kutztown Shoe Factory, for 46 years, retiring in 1997. An avid bowler, Betty was a member of Reading Bowling Association in the 1950's, 60's and 70's. She was also a member of Kutztown and Lyons Fire Company's  Ladies Auxiliary. 

Betty is survived by a daughter-in-law, Donna E. (Minch) Mertz, Mohnton, PA, widow of predeceased son, Dennis W. Mertz, who died in 1976; a granddaughter, Stacy L. (Mertz), wife of Jeriel Guistwite, Hanover, PA, and four, great-grandchildren, Ethan J. Guistwite, Emily S. Guistwite, Jared D. Swingholm and Natalie C. Swingholm. Betty was predeceased by her husband, parents, son, grandson, Douglas W. Mertz in 2005, a sister, Mabel Mertz, and two brothers, Stanley and Francis Wartzenluft.

A funeral service to celebrate Betty's life will be held on Monday, December11, 2017 at 12:00 noon in Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown, with Reverend Mary Ann Hamm, officiating. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, Kutztown. Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing on Monday morning from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the funeral home.
