The Life of Howard W McFadden

oward W. McFadden, 83, of Pottsville, passed away peacefully Sunday at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Schuylkill E. Norwegian Street. 

Howard was a son of the late Walter and Lois Hilton McFadden. He was married to Shirley M. Archer McFadden, who passed away in 2003, after 48 years of marriage.

He was born in Oil City and graduated from Oil City High School.

Howard was a veteran of the Army, stationed at West Point, N.Y. After being honorably discharged, he worked for American General Life Insurance Co. and retired after 39 very successful years. In his retirement years, he worked in the pro shop at Mountain Valley Golf Course. Howard was a member of United Presbyterian Church, Pottsville. Throughout his life, he was an avid sports enthusiast, both as a participant and spectator. He played a wide array of sports including golf, wrestling, baseball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, hand ball and table tennis. Howard was also a very talented oil painter. His primary interest in his later years was the lives, interests and accomplishments of his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, George.

Surviving are daughters, Leslie Tomasini, wife of David, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Tammie Hampford, wife of Ned, Pottsville, and Lori Foster, wife of Chip, Schuylkill Haven; grandchildren, Michael Silvestri, Matthew Silvestri, Adam Hampford, Eric Hampford, fiance of Kaley Ebling, Kevin Hampford, Dr. Benjamin Foster, Dr. Corey Foster and Emily Foster; step-grandchildren, Gina Amann and David M. Tomasini; brothers, W. Joseph, husband of Donna, Winter Haven, Fla., and David, former husband of the late Sarah (Betty), Oil City; nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Schuylkill Memorial Park Chapel with Pastor Sue Marie Baskette of United Presbyterian Church, Pottsville, officiating. Family and friends are invited to gather from 1 p.m. until the time of service at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Howard's name be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at www.jdrf.org; Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org; or Hillside SPCA, P.O. Box 233, Pottsville, PA 17901. Grabowski Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
